Excuses

GEN 3:12  The man said, "The woman you put here with me--she gave me some

fruit from the tree, and I ate it."

13  Then the LORD God said to the woman, "What is this you have done?" The

woman said, "The serpent deceived me, and I ate."

EXO 4:1  Moses answered, "What if they do not believe me or listen to me

and say, 'The LORD did not appear to you'?"

10  Moses said to the LORD, "O Lord, I have never been eloquent, neither in

the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and

tongue."

11  The LORD said to him, "Who gave man his mouth? Who makes him deaf or

mute? Who gives him sight or makes him blind? Is it not I, the LORD?

12  Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say."

13  But Moses said, "O Lord, please send someone else to do it."

14  Then the LORD'S anger burned against Moses and he said, "What about

your brother, Aaron the Levite? I know he can speak well. He is already on

his way to meet you, and his heart will be glad when he sees you.

32:22  "Do not be angry, my lord," Aaron answered. "You know how prone

these people are to evil.

23  They said to me, 'Make us gods who will go before us. As for this

fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don't know what has

happened to him.'

24  So I told them, 'Whoever has any gold jewelry, take it off.' Then they

gave me the gold, and I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf!"

DEU 30:11  Now what I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you

or beyond your reach.

12  It is not up in heaven, so that you have to ask, "Who will ascend into

heaven to get it and proclaim it to us so we may obey it?"

13  Nor is it beyond the sea, so that you have to ask, "Who will cross the

sea to get it and proclaim it to us so we may obey it?"

14  No, the word is very near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart so

you may obey it.

JDG 6:12  When the angel of the LORD appeared to Gideon, he said, "The LORD

is with you, mighty warrior."

13  "But sir," Gideon replied, "if the LORD is with us, why has all this

happened to us? Where are all his wonders that our fathers told us about

when they said, 'Did not the LORD bring us up out of Egypt?' But now the

LORD has abandoned us and put us into the hand of Midian."

14  The LORD turned to him and said, "Go in the strength you have and save

Israel out of Midian's hand. Am I not sending you?"

15  "But Lord," Gideon asked, "how can I save Israel? My clan is the

weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family."

16  The LORD answered, "I will be with you, and you will strike down all

the Midianites together."

17  Gideon replied, "If now I have found favor in your eyes, give me a sign

that it is really you talking to me.

1KI 19:19  So Elijah went from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat. He

was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen, and he himself was driving the

twelfth pair. Elijah went up to him and threw his cloak around him.

20  Elisha then left his oxen and ran after Elijah. "Let me kiss my father

and mother good-by," he said, "and then I will come with you." "Go back,"

Elijah replied. "What have I done to you?"

21  So Elisha left him and went back. He took his yoke of oxen and

slaughtered them. He burned the plowing equipment to cook the meat and gave

it to the people, and they ate. Then he set out to follow Elijah and became

his attendant.

2KI 5:10  Elisha sent a messenger to say to him, "Go, wash yourself seven

times in the Jordan, and your flesh will be restored and you will be

cleansed."

11  But Naaman went away angry and said, "I thought that he would surely

come out to me and stand and call on the name of the LORD his God, wave his

hand over the spot and cure me of my leprosy.

12  Are not Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than any of

the waters of Israel? Couldn't I wash in them and be cleansed?" So he

turned and went off in a rage.

13  Naaman's servants went to him and said, "My father, if the prophet had

told you to do some great thing, would you not have done it? How much more,

then, when he tells you, 'Wash and be cleansed'!"

14  So he went down and dipped himself in the Jordan seven times, as the

man of God had told him, and his flesh was restored and became clean like

that of a young boy.

JER 1:1  The words of Jeremiah son of Hilkiah, one of the priests at

Anathoth in the territory of Benjamin.

4  The word of the LORD came to me, saying,

5  "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set

you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations."

6  "Ah, Sovereign LORD," I said, "I do not know how to speak; I am only a

child."

7  But the LORD said to me, "Do not say, 'I am only a child.' You must go

to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you.

8  Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you,"

declares the LORD.

9  Then the LORD reached out his hand and touched my mouth and said to me,

"Now, I have put my words in your mouth.

10  See, today I appoint you over nations and kingdoms to uproot and tear

down, to destroy and overthrow, to build and to plant."

MAT 8:21  Another disciple said to him, "Lord, first let me go and bury my

father."

LUK 9:59  He said to another man, "Follow me." But the man replied, "Lord,

first let me go and bury my father."

60  Jesus said to him, "Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and

proclaim the kingdom of God."

61  Still another said, "I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back

and say good-by to my family."

62  Jesus replied, "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is

fit for service in the kingdom of God."

14:18  "But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said, 'I have

just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.'

19  "Another said, 'I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I'm on my way

to try them out. Please excuse me.'

20  "Still another said, 'I just got married, so I can't come.'

ACT 24:25  As Paul discoursed on righteousness, self-control and the

judgment to come, Felix was afraid and said, "That's enough for now! You

may leave. When I find it convenient, I will send for you."

ROM 1:20  For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities--

his eternal power and divine nature--have been clearly seen, being

understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.

2:1  You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else,

for at whatever point you judge the other, you are condemning yourself,

because you who pass judgment do the same things.
