Death

GEN 2:17  but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and

evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die."

3:19  By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to

the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you

will return."

5:24  Enoch walked with God; then he was no more, because God took him

away.

6:7  So the LORD said, "I will wipe mankind, whom I have created, from the

face of the earth--men and animals, and creatures that move along the

ground, and birds of the air--for I am grieved that I have made them."

11  Now the earth was corrupt in God's sight and was full of violence.

12  God saw how corrupt the earth had become, for all the people on earth

had corrupted their ways.

13  So God said to Noah, "I am going to put an end to all people, for the

earth is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going to destroy

both them and the earth.

15:15  You, however, will go to your fathers in peace and be buried at a

good old age.

19:12  The two men said to Lot, "Do you have anyone else here--sons-in-law,

sons or daughters, or anyone else in the city who belongs to you? Get them

out of here,

13  because we are going to destroy this place. The outcry to the LORD

against its people is so great that he has sent us to destroy it."

24  Then the LORD rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah--from

the LORD out of the heavens.

25  Thus he overthrew those cities and the entire plain, including all

those living in the cities--and also the vegetation in the land.

25:8  Then Abraham breathed his last and died at a good old age, an old man

and full of years; and he was gathered to his people.

27:2  Isaac said, "I am now an old man and don't know the day of my death.

35:29  Then he breathed his last and died and was gathered to his people,

old and full of years. And his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.

49:33  When Jacob had finished giving instructions to his sons, he drew his

feet up into the bed, breathed his last and was gathered to his people.

NUM 11:15  If this is how you are going to treat me, put me to death right

now--if I have found favor in your eyes--and do not let me face my own

ruin."

16:30  But if the LORD brings about something totally new, and the earth

opens its mouth and swallows them, with everything that belongs to them,

and they go down alive into the grave, then you will know that these men

have treated the LORD with contempt."

23:10  Who can count the dust of Jacob or number the fourth part of Israel?

Let me die the death of the righteous, and may my end be like theirs!"

DEU 31:16  And the LORD said to Moses: "You are going to rest with your

fathers, and these people will soon prostitute themselves to the foreign

gods of the land they are entering. They will forsake me and break the

covenant I made with them.

32:29  If only they were wise and would understand this and discern what

their end will be!

JOS 23:14  "Now I am about to go the way of all the earth. You know with

all your heart and soul that not one of all the good promises the LORD your

God gave you has failed. Every promise has been fulfilled; not one has

failed.

1SA 2:6  "The LORD brings death and makes alive; he brings down to the

grave and raises up.

20:2  "Never!" Jonathan replied. "You are not going to die! Look, my father

doesn't do anything, great or small, without confiding in me. Why would he

hide this from me? It's not so!"

3  But David took an oath and said, "Your father knows very well that I

have found favor in your eyes, and he has said to himself, 'Jonathan must

not know this or he will be grieved.' Yet as surely as the LORD lives and

as you live, there is only a step between me and death."

25:38  About ten days later, the LORD struck Nabal and he died.

2SA 1:23  "Saul and Jonathan--in life they were loved and gracious, and in

death they were not parted. They were swifter than eagles, they were

stronger than lions.

12:23  But now that he is dead, why should I fast? Can I bring him back

again? I will go to him, but he will not return to me."

14:14  Like water spilled on the ground, which cannot be recovered, so we

must die. But God does not take away life; instead, he devises ways so that

a banished person may not remain estranged from him.

1KI 19:4  while he himself went a day's journey into the desert. He came to

a broom tree, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. "I have had

enough, LORD," he said. "Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors."

2KI 2:1  When the LORD was about to take Elijah up to heaven in a

whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal.

20:1  In those days Hezekiah became ill and was at the point of death. The

prophet Isaiah son of Amoz went to him and said, "This is what the LORD

says: Put your house in order, because you are going to die; you will not

recover."

22:19  Because your heart was responsive and you humbled yourself before

the LORD when you heard what I have spoken against this place and its

people, that they would become accursed and laid waste, and because you

tore your robes and wept in my presence, I have heard you, declares the

LORD.

20  Therefore I will gather you to your fathers, and you will be buried in

peace. Your eyes will not see all the disaster I am going to bring on this

place.'" So they took her answer back to the king.

1CH 10:13  Saul died because he was unfaithful to the LORD; he did not keep

the word of the LORD and even consulted a medium for guidance,

14  and did not inquire of the LORD. So the LORD put him to death and

turned the kingdom over to David son of Jesse.

2CH 21:6  He walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, as the house of

Ahab had done, for he married a daughter of Ahab. He did evil in the eyes

of the LORD.

20  Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in

Jerusalem eight years. He passed away, to no one's regret, and was buried

in the City of David, but not in the tombs of the kings.

JOB 1:21  and said: "Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I will

depart. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD

be praised."

3:1  After this, Job opened his mouth and cursed the day of his birth.

13  For now I would be lying down in peace; I would be asleep and at rest

17  There the wicked cease from turmoil, and there the weary are at rest.

18  Captives also enjoy their ease; they no longer hear the slave driver's

shout.

19  The small and the great are there, and the slave is freed from his

master.

4:21  Are not the cords of their tent pulled up, so that they die without

wisdom?'

6:8  "Oh, that I might have my request, that God would grant what I hope

for,

9  that God would be willing to crush me, to let loose his hand and cut me

off!

10  Then I would still have this consolation--my joy in unrelenting pain--

that I had not denied the words of the Holy One.

11  "What strength do I have, that I should still hope? What prospects,

that I should be patient?

7:1  "Does not man have hard service on earth? Are not his days like those

of a hired man?

2  Like a slave longing for the evening shadows, or a hired man waiting

eagerly for his wages,

3  so I have been allotted months of futility, and nights of misery have

been assigned to me.

8  The eye that now sees me will see me no longer; you will look for me,

but I will be no more.

9  As a cloud vanishes and is gone, so he who goes down to the grave does

not return.

10  He will never come to his house again; his place will know him no more.

15  so that I prefer strangling and death, rather than this body of mine.

16  I despise my life; I would not live forever. Let me alone; my days have

no meaning.

21  Why do you not pardon my offenses and forgive my sins? For I will soon

lie down in the dust; you will search for me, but I will be no more."

10:1  "I loathe my very life; therefore I will give free rein to my

complaint and speak out in the bitterness of my soul.

21  before I go to the place of no return, to the land of gloom and deep

shadow,

22  to the land of deepest night, of deep shadow and disorder, where even

the light is like darkness."

14:2  He springs up like a flower and withers away; like a fleeting shadow,

he does not endure.

5  Man's days are determined; you have decreed the number of his months and

have set limits he cannot exceed.

6  So look away from him and let him alone, till he has put in his time

like a hired man.

7  "At least there is hope for a tree: If it is cut down, it will sprout

again, and its new shoots will not fail.

8  Its roots may grow old in the ground and its stump die in the soil,

9  yet at the scent of water it will bud and put forth shoots like a plant.

10  But man dies and is laid low; he breathes his last and is no more.

11  As water disappears from the sea or a riverbed becomes parched and dry,

12  so man lies down and does not rise; till the heavens are no more, men

will not awake or be roused from their sleep.

13  "If only you would hide me in the grave and conceal me till your anger

has passed! If only you would set me a time and then remember me!

14  If a man dies, will he live again? All the days of my hard service I

will wait for my renewal to come.

19  as water wears away stones and torrents wash away the soil, so you

destroy man's hope.

20  You overpower him once for all, and he is gone; you change his

countenance and send him away.

21  If his sons are honored, he does not know it; if they are brought low,

he does not see it.

16:22  "Only a few years will pass before I go on the journey of no return.

17:13  If the only home I hope for is the grave, if I spread out my bed in

darkness,

14  if I say to corruption, 'You are my father,' and to the worm, 'My

mother' or 'My sister,'

16  Will it go down to the gates of death? Will we descend together into

the dust?"

18:14  He is torn from the security of his tent and marched off to the king

of terrors.

18  He is driven from light into darkness and is banished from the world.

20:4  "Surely you know how it has been from of old, ever since man was

placed on the earth,

5  that the mirth of the wicked is brief, the joy of the godless lasts but

a moment.

8  Like a dream he flies away, no more to be found, banished like a vision

of the night.

11  The youthful vigor that fills his bones will lie with him in the dust.

21:13  They spend their years in prosperity and go down to the grave in

peace.

17  "Yet how often is the lamp of the wicked snuffed out? How often does

calamity come upon them, the fate God allots in his anger?

18  How often are they like straw before the wind, like chaff swept away by

a gale?

23  One man dies in full vigor, completely secure and at ease,

24  his body well nourished, his bones rich with marrow.

25  Another man dies in bitterness of soul, never having enjoyed anything

good.

26  Side by side they lie in the dust, and worms cover them both.

32  He is carried to the grave, and watch is kept over his tomb.

33  The soil in the valley is sweet to him; all men follow after him, and a

countless throng goes before him.

24:20  The womb forgets them, the worm feasts on them; evil men are no

longer remembered but are broken like a tree.

24  For a little while they are exalted, and then they are gone; they are

brought low and gathered up like all others; they are cut off like heads of

grain.

27:8  For what hope has the godless when he is cut off, when God takes away

his life?

19  He lies down wealthy, but will do so no more; when he opens his eyes,

all is gone.

20  Terrors overtake him like a flood; a tempest snatches him away in the

night.

21  The east wind carries him off, and he is gone; it sweeps him out of his

place.

22  It hurls itself against him without mercy as he flees headlong from its

power.

23  It claps its hands in derision and hisses him out of his place.

30:23  I know you will bring me down to death, to the place appointed for

all the living.

34:14  If it were his intention and he withdrew his spirit and breath,

15  all mankind would perish together and man would return to the dust.

20  They die in an instant, in the middle of the night; the people are

shaken and they pass away; the mighty are removed without human hand.

36:12  But if they do not listen, they will perish by the sword and die

without knowledge.

14  They die in their youth, among male prostitutes of the shrines.

18  Be careful that no one entices you by riches; do not let a large bribe

turn you aside.

20  Do not long for the night, to drag people away from their homes.

38:17  Have the gates of death been shown to you? Have you seen the gates

of the shadow of death?

PSA 6:5  No one remembers you when he is dead. Who praises you from the

grave?

23:4  Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will

fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort

me.

30:9  "What gain is there in my destruction, in my going down into the pit?

Will the dust praise you? Will it proclaim your faithfulness?

31:5  Into your hands I commit my spirit; redeem me, O LORD, the God of

truth.

37:1  Do not fret because of evil men or be envious of those who do wrong;

10  A little while, and the wicked will be no more; though you look for

them, they will not be found.

35  I have seen a wicked and ruthless man flourishing like a green tree in

its native soil,

36  but he soon passed away and was no more; though I looked for him, he

could not be found.

37  Consider the blameless, observe the upright; there is a future for the

man of peace.

39:4  "Show me, O LORD, my life's end and the number of my days; let me

know how fleeting is my life.

13  Look away from me, that I may rejoice again before I depart and am no

more."

49:7  No man can redeem the life of another or give to God a ransom for

him--

9  that he should live on forever and not see decay.

10  For all can see that wise men die; the foolish and the senseless alike

perish and leave their wealth to others.

14  Like sheep they are destined for the grave, and death will feed on

them. The upright will rule over them in the morning; their forms will

decay in the grave, far from their princely mansions.

15  But God will redeem my life from the grave; he will surely take me to

himself. Selah

17  for he will take nothing with him when he dies, his splendor will not

descend with him.

19  he will join the generation of his fathers, who will never see the

light of life.

20  A man who has riches without understanding is like the beasts that

perish.

55:15  Let death take my enemies by surprise; let them go down alive to the

grave, for evil finds lodging among them.

23  But you, O God, will bring down the wicked into the pit of corruption;

bloodthirsty and deceitful men will not live out half their days. But as

for me, I trust in you.

58:9  Before your pots can feel the heat of the thorns-- whether they be

green or dry--the wicked will be swept away.

68:20  Our God is a God who saves; from the Sovereign LORD comes escape

from death.

73:3  For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

4  They have no struggles; their bodies are healthy and strong.

17  till I entered the sanctuary of God; then I understood their final

destiny.

18  Surely you place them on slippery ground; you cast them down to ruin.

19  How suddenly are they destroyed, completely swept away by terrors!

20  As a dream when one awakes, so when you arise, O Lord, you will despise

them as fantasies.

24  You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into

glory.
